It may still be a long way away until the start of the new season but new Wanderers manager Markus Babbel has acknowledged the hard work needed for success along with his appreciation for the fans.
The German has played in some big stadia and large crowds in his career, so he knows a thing or two about the players’ relationship with the fans – of course having played at Anfield while at Liverpool for many seasons in the Premier League and other european competitions during his time there.
In an online video where he gives us his views on football fans and what he looks for in his players and style, he states that fans are the heart of every club and understands the importance of the fans to the players – something that we all would agree. He almost talks like a fan himself where he points out the fantastic feeling fans get when watching their team play and win (not always) and the passion they bring flows through the players.
With players back into the longest pre-season in world football, he has already made the assertion that hard work is what he looks for in his squad. Obviously we as fans and as a club overall want to win and be successful, yet he’s also put forward that he wants to play with an attractive style so to speak. After the failed Gombau stint where we were promised possession based attacking football, forgive me for being skeptical, but with the right players in the right positions we may see what we were promised last season and see a Wanderers side that will be a joy to watch.
Coming into a new club and new country may seem daunting, however he already looks focused to take the Wanderers back to the top of our ‘glory days’ at the top of the league come April and May 2019. His emphasis on hard work for the players along with the passion and support from the fans tells me that he understands our point of view and wants to be remembered for the success he hopes to bring to western Sydney.
