ACL Squad Announced

The Wanderers have announced the squad that will be taking part in the 2014 AFC Champions League Group Stages.
As mentioned on this week’s podcast, 3 goalkeepers are required hence the inclusion of National Youth League Goalkeeper Thomas Manos.

The ACL rules only allow 3+1 Visa players to partake in the competition, with the +1 having to be from the AFC (ie Shinji Ono). Mateo Poljak was the Visa player that was not included in Popa’s ACL squad with Polenz and Hersi making the cut despite neither of them having signed on for next season yet.

Everyone else in the senior A-League squad were included along with several National Youth Team players that have featured sporadically this season such as Daniel Alessi, Jaushua Sotirio and Alusine Fofanah.

New signings Antony Golec, Golgol Mebrahtu and Daniel Mullen obviously were included as they were signed specifically for the competition (Golec especially, as his deal does not extend beyond the ACL Group Stages).

The 2nd Round begins in the first week of May (a few days after the A-League Grand Final) which will use this squad. The club has the opportunity to submit a different squad for the Quarter Finals and beyond by 19th July 2014. The official AFC website doesn’t have the dates of when the Quarter Finals are staged but expect them to be either in August or September as previous seasons have had.

  1. Shame we had to leave Poljak out. Still hope the squad and the style of play gives our opponents headaches. So pumped, can’t wait for the 26th! No other sport in this country has the opportunity for such a club competition. Hope the Wanderers go way beyond our expectations……Again!
