Redundant Finals?

Team six (Brisbane Roar) was knocked out by Melbourne City on Friday night and team five (Adelaide United) was knocked out by Melbourne Victory tonight. So, for the umpteenth time the top four finish teams will face each other in the semi-finals: Newcastle Jets vs Melbourne City and Sydney FC vs Melbourne Victory.

This is not a surprise to many, including Stephen who has been a heavy critic of the finals system (as have I) and see no need for it as the bottom two of the six clubs always get knocked out of the elimination semi’s. The whole finals system is a waste if you ask me as it rewards mediocrity for those who have only been ‘that’ good enough to make it through to the last six – it’s a piss take.

By all accounts we’ll see a Sydney FC / Newcastle Jets final come two Sundays time and once again the other four teams would have only played extra games as a warm up for those who finished first and second. However, should either Melbourne clubs win and make the grand final and win it, it would be the only time a team to win the grand final who had finished outside the top two, which if we’re honest is a kick in the balls to the team who fought over twenty-seven rounds to be the most consistent and best team in the league.

A finals knock-out series is more of a cash grab than a show of excellence to be “champion”.
